Champaign-Urbana Mourns Loss of Beloved Community Leader Joan Garretson

On a day when our community is reflecting on the life and legacy of Joan Garretson, Champaign-Urbana has lost a pillar of strength, a matriarch figure, and a vibrant beacon of hope. Born and raised in Champaign, Joan has spent her whole life dedicating herself to her family, community, and friends. Her remarkable journey through life has forever left an indelible mark on our society.

Joan passed away on Friday, March 8th, 2024, at the age of 85. Her passing brought a deep sense of shock, sadness, and incomprehension to the people who adored her from all walks of life in the Champaign-Urbana community. The Champaign Gazette's obituary serves as a true tribute to Joan, saying: "Joan Garretson, a storied Champaign figure well-versed in charitable philanthropy, devoted wife, and local legend, unfortunately left this world unexpectedly". Joan's infectious smile, combined with her exceptional commitment, courage, compassion, character, love, and the unexampled generosity captured the hearts of our magnificent neighbors, whose paths in one way or another she crossed more than once because her way of communication bore depth, trust and had this certain ability to build a web of relationships always going a step forward nurturing kindness, supporting well doers and fostering harmony.

Throughout her fascinating life, Joans spent years breaking racial and social barriers helping some groups get more involved in the art of community advocacy and was often times accompanied with her most immediate influence that brought out a collective spirit reflected in her drive, warmth, an intrinsic concern for what came as good to all, in her modest, humble humility.

• Greatest legacy and numerous reasons of recognition, the reason why throughout the years on multiple fronts her very outstanding record of action should prevail is in her commitment to community participation and her true gift for unification shown all through every movement across different segments of society that she pushed forward.
• Natural leadership: Timeless capacity for fostering community unity and collaborative action, transcending geographical boundaries for several periods of social discord often prevalent during the times she was spearheading initiatives further underpinning such factors through her extensive groundwork her character came to be associated with: love, work, giving and belonging when no one would usually share this very particular gift of a much more inclusive mentality

Omar Gomes and Teresa Hill, her Champaign colleagues at the Champaign-Urbana Public Hospital and former University Chancellor Joseph Ackerman paid respects respectively stating that Joan was "a precious treasure, irreparable and one irrevocable impact brought untold changes, the people she dealt with were either made aware of potential connections which were unseen from there very existence and in a lot sense were made invisible". This as confirmed comes not only as profound commentary from individuals she has inspired but adds depth to defining Joan Garretson once, and again if called for by history.
