Crashes on Michigan's I-96: Analyzing the Numbers and Causes Behind a Deadly Stretch of Highway

Michigan's I-96 is known for its busy traffic, but it's also infamous for being one of the most hazardous stretches of highway in the state. According to the Michigan State Police Accident Report, the section between Ann Arbor and Lansing has seen a staggering number of accidents in recent years, claiming numerous lives and causing thousands of injuries. On average, more than 300 crashes occur on this stretch of highway every year, resulting in fatalities and serious injuries. To understand the root causes of these crashes, a closer look at the data and the most common contributing factors is essential.

The data shows that a significant number of crashes occur during the night, accounting for approximately 40% of the total. Many of these nighttime crashes involve vehicles running off the road or colliding with other cars due to losing control. The reduced visibility at night, partly due to the dimly lit roads or because of weather conditions, has been cited as a major contributing factor.

Speed also plays a significant role in accidents on I-96. The highest number of single-vehicle crashes, which account for over 70% of total crashes on the highway, happen at speeds of at least 65 mph above the posted 70 mph limit. Close to 60% of these incidents happen due to speeding, where drivers lose control at high speeds and end up hitting other road users or the environment. Recordings from dash cams on vehicles have revealed instances of drivers traveling at 100 mph or more down this same highway.
