Pinellas County Focus: Supporting Mental Health in a Community in Crisis

Pinellas County, like many other parts of the country, has been experiencing a growing mental health crisis. The increasing strain on local resources and the need for support have never been more apparent. A growing concern in Pinellas County is the impact of this crisis on the community.

The July 2020 report from the Florida Health Association stated that Pinellas County ranks third highest among Florida's 67 counties for rates of mental illness, with approximately 1 in 5 residents experiencing symptoms of mental distress. Approximately 19% of children in Pinellas County have experienced trauma, 23% have testified traumatic emotional experiences, and over 15.5% take sedatives and/or antidepressants.

Pinellas County has been working to address the mental health crisis by expanding and improving the current infrastructure so residents can get the treatment they need.

One way the county is addressing the mental health crisis is by requesting state funding to provide support to local schools in providing mental health services to students. School boards have implemented programs and programs coordinating residency grip rates of physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Educators, school counselors, or personnel are also intensely trained mental health professionals.

However, experts say school-based mental health programs are only a piece to the puzzle as the count expects to see more manageable support. A more
